Davis

Day 13

The guy who booked me to play at UC Davis did so because he came from Northern Oregon and had a thing about supporting Northwest Artists. He came to the show and loved the tunes so much that he offered me a gig opening for Jethro Tull at the college stadium in December. It was a heady offer, and I accepted right away, even though it meant making a mad dash from Denver after my last gig. He assured me that he'd try to set it up and that I should call him from further down the road. As it turned out, not only did he not have the authority to offer the gig, he mostly forgot about it. By the time I got to Albuquerque, it had gone from "You're definitely in," to "Oh, well if you wanted to send me a tape, I could try to get it to their manager." Still, Davis, with its veritable sea of bicycles, proved to be a positive experience. I played well, the cafeteria crowd was responsive, and I ended my visit the next night at 3 AM, playing live on KDVS with a smuggled in bottle of Guinness and some quickly remembered Led Zeppelin covers.
